Growing up, I was endlessly fascinated by stories of mentorship. Whether it was Mr. Miyagi helping Daniel find his courage or Obi-Wan Kenobi guiding Luke toward his true potential, I was captivated by the magic of a wise guide. I can still picture myself as a young kid walking through the supermarket aisles with my mom, peeking around corners and half hoping I might bump into a wise sage who would offer to be my mentor.
Alongside that search for a guide, I noticed something else early on, which was that the moments in life I cherished most were always the ones rooted in simple human care. When it came time to choose a dissertation topic in graduate school, my chair gave me the best advice possible, which was to research something I truly loved. It was an easy choice. I brought those two lifelong passions together and decided to explore the power of care within mentoring relationships.
That single focus set the path for my life’s work. Over the past thirty years, I have served as a teacher, coach, counselor, professor, writer, speaker, and educational leader. Through every role, my mission has remained the same, which is to deepen my understanding and practice of caring mentorship. In 2019, I published my book, The 5 Practices of the Caring Mentor: Strengthening the Mentoring Relationship From the Inside Out, and today I am fortunate to spend my time speaking, writing, and mentoring people around the world, helping them build connections that truly transform lives.
